Scottburgh High School SportScottburgh High School prides itself in the
level of commitment and enthusiasm shown, by learners and coaches alike
on the sporting front. This tradition of sporting excellence has
included International Sportsmen and Sportswomen as well as numerous
South African School representatives from many different disciplines.
Both past and present greats include Tim Clark (Golf) and Chloë Tryon
(SA Women’s Cricket). Much of Scottburgh High’s success lies not only
in the fact that we offer a wide variety of sporting activities and
excellent facilities in which these young, aspiring sportsmen and
sportswomen are able to develop their skills, but also in the fact that
sport is encouraged as part of the greater educational process. The major sports offered at Scottburgh High are swimming, cricket, waterpolo, rugby, soccer, hockey, indoor hockey, netball, table tennis, tennis, athletics, cross country and golf. Awards are given to learners who achieve highly in these various codes. Awards include, team awards, half colours, full colours and honours. Our learners play all codes of sport with a gusty determination and live up to the motto of our school “Optima Semper” – always our best. House SystemIn the initial years of the High School, up until the 1970's, the High School children were placed in either Baron or Richardson; these two houses being part of the Primary School structure, out of which the school grew. However, the need for greater competition following increased enrolment led to the creation of three houses, Aliwal (Green), Barrow (Red) and Devon (Gold) at the same time that the school colours of blue, white and black were finalised. ALIWAL (green): This is derived from the reef which runs off-shore for most of the Alexandra County coastline. (The name itself is derived from a steamer wrecked there, or the steamer which first sighted the shoal - derivation is in T V Bulpin's book "To the shores of Natal"). BARROW (red): South Barrow is the original name of Umkomaas. As this town was one of the main feeder towns when the school was started, the name was revived and is hence preserved. DEVON (yellow): Similarly, the original name for Scottburgh was Devonport. Thus again a historical association has been revived in the community. Originally it was intended that all children from Umkomaas joined Barrow, from Scottburgh - Devon, and from elsewhere in the country - Aliwal, but the disparity in numbers from the different areas, and the demands of school unity made this impossible. The houses compete against each other throughout the year in a number of sporting, academic and cultural activities for the House Trophies. By involving all learners to a greater or lesser degree, the competition aims to foster spirited and friendly rivalry within the school. |
